  18. An Open Letter To The Democratic Left

  20. We are facing the worst economic decline since the Great 
  21. Depression; a sense of glabal unrest not seen since the Second 
  22. World War. Six months ago, Lost Angeles erupted in the worst 
  23. urban violence in its history. And Americans have elected a 
  24. conservative Democrat from a low wage, right to work state, who 
  25. proposes halfway health care and a suicidal trade agreement.

  27. Where do those of us committed to socialist democracy go from 
  28. here?
  29.  
  30. A Clinton administration will open up space for the left in the 
  31. next four years. But after a campaign targeted at "Reagan 
  32. Democrats" and the middle class, while ignoring people of color 
  33. and urban issues, what will happen to unions and the working poor 
  34. in Bill Clinton's America?
  35.  
  36. In a year when a billionaire has bought up national television 
  37. time in order to cast himself in the role of the "voice of 
  38. change", where is the voice of the left, of economic democracy? 
  39. It seems that our issues are the only ones that have not been 
  40. heard in this election. We need to stop depending on others to 
  41. speak for us, and begin to speak for ourselves.

  43. It's time that we drop the divisions of the past, and make a 
  44. commitment to building a party of the democratic left in this 
  45. country. And this time we're not the only ones telling you this.
  46.  
  47. The call for a labor party, a party of women, working people, 
  48. people of color, students, the unemployed, and those on the 
  49. margins of our society has gone up loudly in this past year. We 
  50. need a new framework upon which to build a voice for social, 
  51. political, and economic democracy in our time.

  53. New parties and exciting ideas for parties have popped up, and 
  54. it's possible that one of these coud blossom into the big 
  55. umbrella we've been looking for.
  56.  
  57. But you should know that there is a political party ready to 
  58. address this fundamental issue of democracy, and to do so in 
  59. coalition with others who are raising that banner; for ninety 
  60. years we have held to the belief that socialism cannot exist 
  61. without it, and now we're  setting our sights on furthering the 
  62. socialist vision to meet the challenges of a new century.  WE 
  63. NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS.

  65. This is a time of crisis for the world, but a time of opportunity 
  66. for those of us who seek to change it. The Socialist Party offers 
  67. a voice to all of us who are looking for a change to a more 
  68. responsible society.
