- CUBAN DIPLOMAT EXPELLED FOR REFUSING TO DEFECT
-
- By Carl Glenn
-
- Last week the Bush administration ordered the expulsion of a
- Cuban diplomat. The diplomat, Carlos Manuel Collazo, was charged
- with spying. The media gave ample coverage to a supposed
- "meeting" that Collazo had with a "double agent." However the
- capitalist press did not report that days before this supposed
- "meeting," a group of FBI agents had accosted the Cuban diplomat
- in the street and threatened him with "unfortunate consequences"
- if he should refuse to defect.
-
- Collazo is supposedly being expelled for having agreed to talk to
- Francisco Avila, alleged to be the "top agent of the Cuban
- security services." But in the media accounts it came out that
- Avila was not only in charge of naval operations for the
- anti-Cuban terrorist organization Alpha 66 but he personally
- confirmed having been an employee of the FBI for the last 30
- years. The Cuban statement ridiculed Avila's claim that as an FBI
- agent he had infiltrated Cuba's security agency.
-
- The Cuban statement asks: "Doesn't Avila's testimony prove that
- the FBI has penetrated and controls these terrorist organizations
- and knows their plans and puts them into action whenever it
- pleases? Doesn't Avila's statements show that these
- counter-revolutionaries have a greater loyalty to the FBI then
- their own organizations and consider U.S. officials their true
- leaders?"
-
- The Cuban news release also points out that the State Department
- spokesperson who announced the expulsion of Collazo was none
- other than Richard Boucher, who earlier this year openly defended
- raids by terrorist commando groups organized and trained in the
- U.S.
