  19. NONVIOLENCE IN NATIONAL FOREST

  21.   Wild Rockies Earth First! has been actively opposing two
  22. massive timber sales in Idaho's Nez Perce National Forest.
  23. EF! targeted these sales as examples of what is happening to
  24. the virgin forests of the Wild Rockies. The affected areas are
  25. an important wildlife habitat and migration corridor and are
  26. part of the largest roadless wilderness complex in the lower
  27. 48 states.

  29.   The goal of EF! organizing is to block construction of roads
  30. into these forests. Activists arrived in July and established
  31. a base camp.  They held meetings with the Red River District
  32. Forest Service and hiked into the forest to look for signs of
  33. surveying and road building.  Finding what they were looking for
  34. activists have since engaged in various direct actions including
  35. tree sitting, building platforms in roads to block further
  36. construction, chaining themselves to bulldozers, demonstrating
  37. at the Forest Service office, etc. Some activists have been
  38. arrested and many have been harassed by Forest Service special
  39. agents.
