- INFLATION UNDER CONTROL IN NICARAGUA
-
- The Nicaraguan government has been able to control inflation this
- year which in October rose only to 1.3%, according to Miniser of
- the Economy Julio Cardenas. The government estimates that the
- economy will grow by 4% or 5% in 1993. Cardenas made his
- statements to journalists after the end of the first round of
- talks between the government's economic advisors and private
- business people, as well as political parties and labor unions.
- He added that the round of talks will continue with different
- political parties and with the Catholic church during the next
- week, as a step prior to a meting with delegates from non-
- governmental organizations and countries which are in cooperation
- with Nicaragua. That meeting is scheduled to take place in
- Nicaragua on December 3. Despite the economic crisis, Cardenas
- stated that the country had a noticable increase in the production
- of basic grains (rice, beans and corn) and industrial production.
-
- Regarding the high level of unemployment, estimated to be 60%,
- Cardenas confrmed that the situation can be resolved "with the
- creation of new businesses based on increased domestic and
- international investment." (AP 11/16)
