- [Taken from Bruce Lilly's recent posting]
-
- Analysis of the latest UUCP maps available here as of today
- revealed the following backlinks, i.e. missing (undeclared)
- links for which the reverse link is declared in the maps.
- [BTW, pathalias can be made to emit this information by
- supplying more than one -v flag; e.g. pathalias -vv ...]
-
- As the primary purpose of the UUCP maps is to describe the UUCP
- network for the purpose of mail routing, and as a reverse link
- is necessary (e.g for bounce messages), a missing link indicates
- an inconsistency in the map data which may result in unusable or
- unreliable paths.
-
- One way the inconsistency can arise is if a link is removed from
- one site's map entry (when the link is no longer functional),
- but the other site's map entry is not revised. Certainly in this
- case the link (either direction) cannot be counted on to work.
-
- It is also possible that one direction of a link is not declared
- by the corresponding site due to indolence, ineptness,
- ignorance, selfishness, etc. In this case as well, the link can
- probably not be relied upon.
-
- Finally, it is possible that the forward link is a typographical
- error, e.g. a link may be declared where an alias is intended
- (i.e. the '=' is left out).
