- Introduction
- ------------
- Solaris 2.1 is the second, and most important release in Sun's transition
- to SVR4. It is the first SVR4 release to support all SPARC platforms and
- the first to be the default operating environment on Sun's high volume
- desktop platforms. The new SPARCclassic and SPARCstation LX systems and ALL
- SuperSPARC multiprocessor configurations will, in fact, ONLY run Solaris
- 2.1.
-
- Solaris 2.1 is now the hub of Sun's distributed computing strategy.
- It contains important new functionality and significant quality and
- performance enhancements over Solaris 2.0, making it the most robust
- and complete SVR4 based operating environment in the industry.

-
- What's New in Solaris
- ---------------------
- Sun is "cutting over" to Solaris 2.1 as the default operating
- environment. Preinstalled systems will feature JumpStart software, a new
- SunSoft value-added enhancement. JumpStart software enables administrators to
- define and automatically install a customized environment (both system
- software and application software) perfectly suited to each user's
- predetermined profile. Future releases of Solaris can be installed
- automatically with very little involvement from the system administrator.
- The reduced time, expertise and effort required to install or upgrade
- software environments benefits users and system administrators.
-
- Also new in Solaris 2.1 are several Administration Tool components.
- The Administration Tool is a GUI-based tool that automates many tasks
- that previously took a great deal of time and effort of system
- administrators. The tool has four components: Printer Manager helps
- setup and administer printers on the network; User Account manager
- helps create a logon and a home directory (complete with NIS+
- credentials and statup files); Host Manager installs and net configures
- diskless and dataless clients and net configures standalone clients,
- allowing the administrator to bypass the installation screens; Database
- Manager is an interface to the NIS+ databases, allowing the
- administrator to manage all entries in the databases.
-
- Solaris 2.1 adds the XGL(TM) 3.0 Graphics Library runtime environment as
- the foundation library for all graphics applications. Solaris 2.1 also
- supports the Open Graphics initiative, a set of open, standard graphics
- interfaces, allowing third party graphics drivers to be easily
- integrated into customers' environments.
-
- Solaris 2.1 marks the first release from Sun that provides symmetric
- multiprocessing (SMP) support (all current SPARCserver 600MP Series
- and SPARCstation 10 multiprocessor configurations). SMP increases
- system throughput and allows customers to take full advantage of their
- hardware. ALL current and future SuperSPARC multiprocessor configurations
- REQUIRE Solaris 2.1 or a later release. Full support for the SPARCcenter(TM)
- 2000 Series is contained in a future release of Solaris 2.x.
-
- Localized versions of Solaris 2.1 will also be available (see Availability
- section below for dates), providing a user environment that is completely
- internationalized and localized in eight different languages: German,
- French, Swedish, Italian, Taiwan Chinese, PRC Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
- Internationalization facilities in Solaris 2.1 also facilitate the
- internationalization and localization of customers' existing and new
- applications.
-
- NOTE: The features listed above are all new to Solaris, above and beyond
- the features already in Solaris 2.0. For a list of those features,
- please refer SunFlash 43.06, "Solaris 2.0"
-
- Performance
- -----------
- Solaris 2.1 exhibits significant performance improvements over Solaris
- 2.0! In uniprocessor configurations, Solaris 2.1 provides superior CPU
- performance and equivalent interactive performance to Solaris 1.x,
- positioning Solaris 2.1 as the ideal desktop environment for the vast
- majority of applications.
-
- In multiprocessor configurations, Solaris 2.1 provides outstanding
- performance and scaling for CPU-intensive applications and approximately
- equivalent performance in other areas (averaging performance over the suite
- of benchmarks - CPU, I/O, database, timesharing, networking, interactive).
- Therefore, Solaris 2.1 is very well positioned for compute-intensive
- applications that can harness the power of Sun's multiprocessor hardware.
-
- In subsequent releases of Solaris 2.x, Sun will incorporate performance
- enhancements that will provide superior performance throughout the
- operating environment and not just at the CPU and interactive levels.

- Hardware and Documentation Transition Issues:
- --------------------------------------------
- On December 7th, SPARCclassic and SPARCstation LX systems will begin
- shipping with JumpStart software on the internal disk. THE FULL
- SOLARIS 2.1 IMAGE WILL NOT BE PREINSTALLED ON THESE SYSTEMS. JumpStart
- software allows the customer to automatically install a fully
- customized Solaris 2.1 operating environment on the target system. The
- software is installed from either a local CD-ROM, CD-ROM on the
- network, or from a software server on the network. Therefore,
- customers with SPARCclassic systems and/or SPARCstation LX systems must
- order at least one Solaris 2.1 CD-ROM to install Solaris 2.1 on their
- systems. (However, you do not need a 1-to-1 CD-to-workstation ratio.
- You just need access to one CD.) PLEASE REFER TO THE JUMPSTART CARD IN
- THE COUNTRY KIT FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON USING JUMPSTART.
-
- The SPARCstation 10 (Models 30 and 41 single CPU) will have BOTH JumpStart
- functionality AND Solaris 1.1 preinstalled on diskfull systems.
- Therefore, customers who order a SPARCstation 10 prior to December 6 and
- want to run Solaris 1.1 will be "Solaris 2.1 ready." They will have the
- option of running Solaris 1.1 (aleady on the disk) or Solaris 2.1
- (installed using JumpStart). After December 7, if a customer wants to
- run Solaris 1.1 on their SPARCstation 10, they MUST have access to the Solaris
- 1.1 CD-ROM separately. If they want to run Solaris 2.1, they must also
- have access to the Solaris 2.1 CD-ROM. PLEASE REFER TO THE
- "INSTALLATION FOR EVERYONE" MANUAL FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
-
- Hardcopy format of the Owner's doc set will no longer be bundled with
- the Country Kits. However, hardcopy of the Owner's doc set can still
- be ordered standalone for $100 -- it is now called the End User
- Documentation Set. The software portion of the Install
- manual is in Answerbook(TM). The hardware portion of the install manual
- and the hardware product notes are part of the System Accessory Kit.
- The Country Kit will now consist of the System Accessory Kit only.
- Starting 12/7/92, when you order a SPARCstation 10, SPARCstation LC,
- SPARCstation LX, or SPARCserver 600MP series Country
- Kit or buy a standalone System Accessory Kit, you will get the following:
-
- * Type 5 keyboard
- * Mouse
- * SunMicrophone
- * Power Cords
- * Hardware Manual
- * Hardware Product Notes
- * Jumpstart Card
- * On-line Documentation Note
- * Type 5 Keyboard Product Notes
- * Type 5 Keyboard Layout Card
- * Mouse Labels
- * Customer Card
- * Ergonomics Card
-
- SPARCstation ELC, SPARCstation IPC, SPARCstation IPX, and SPARCstation
- 2 Country Kits will remain the same. They will still ship with
- Hardcopy Owner's doc set. They will also continue to ship with Solaris
- 1.1 preinstalled as long as they are on the price list. To run Solaris
- 2.1 on these systems, the customer must order it separately.
-

- Questions and Answers on Section 1 topics
- -----------------------------------------
- Q. What are the differences between Solaris 2.0 and Solaris 2.1?
-
- A. Solaris 2.1 includes all the functionality in Solaris 2.0 PLUS
- additional platform support (outlined above), JumpStart software, the
- Administration Tool, the XGL 3.0 Graphics Library runtime environment,
- bugfixes and performance tuning.
-
-
- Q. Why doesn't Solaris 2.1 support the SPARCcenter 2000 Series?
-
- A. The SPARCcenter 2000 Series has a target availability of April
- 1993; therefore, it will not FCS with Solaris 2.1. All
- bugfixing and performance tuning for SPARCcenter 2000 Series
- support is centered on the Solaris release that will run on
- that platform.
-
-
- Q. What third party applications will be available on Solaris 2.1?
-
- A. Independent software vendors (ISVs) will announce the availability
- of approximately 100 applications at the Solaris 2.1 introduction.
- An additional 250 are expected to ship on Solaris 2.1 by the end
- of the third fiscal quarter. These applications are listed in the
- Catalyst catalog "A Guide to More Than 350 Software Applications,
- Summer `92" (literature distribution part no. 801-2879-01).
-
-
- Q. What Sun unbundled applications will be available on Solaris 2.1?
-
- A. See list above.
-
-
- Q. Now that Solaris 2.1 is the default OS, how long will Sun
- continue to ship Solaris 1.1?
-
- A. Solaris 1.1 remains the default operating environment on all
- currently shipping Sun-4c platforms (SPARCstation ELC,
- SPARCstation IPC, SPARCstation IPX, and SPARCstation 2) and we will
- continue to preinstall these systems with Solaris 1.1 as long as
- they are on the SMCC price list. Several of the Sun-4c
- platforms will continue to ship at least through the end of fiscal
- year 1993; hence, there are no plans to announce the end of Solaris
- 1.1 prior to the end of the fiscal year and probably not before
- the end of calendar year 1993. Once Solaris 1.1 is transitioned
- off the price list, Sun will support it for five years, with support
- diminishing over the five year period.
-
-
- Q. How well does Solaris 2.1 perform compared to Solaris 1.x?
-
- A. In uniprocessor configurations, Solaris 2.1 performance is
- excellent compared to Solaris 1.x performance. CPU performance
- is superior to that of Solaris 1.x and interactive and I/O
- performance is equivalent. Database and networking performance
- exhibit degradation of approximately 10-15% and timesharing degrades
- by about 26%.
-
- In multiprocessor configurations, CPU and NFS performance and
- scaling are better than that of Solaris 1.x. I/O, multiuser
- and database performance exhibit some degradation. Therefore,
- Solaris 2.1 is best suited primarily for CPU-intensive
- applications.
-
-
- Q. What are Sun's plans for performance improvements in future
- releases?
-
- A. Performance has improved significantly over Solaris 2.0.
- The next Solaris release, scheduled for the first half of
- calendar year 1993, will incorporate significant improvements
- in performance beyond that of Solaris 2.1, particularly in
- multiprocessor configurations. I/O, database and multiuser
- performance, in particular, will exhibit significant increases
- in performance and scalability.
-
-
- Q. When will the Solaris for x86 platforms be available?
-
- A. The Solaris for x86 Early Access Program for ISVs began
- in September, 1992. The Solaris for x86 End User Release is
- expected to be released in the first half of calendar year 1993.
-
-
- Q. What about C2 security?
-
- A. Solaris 2.1 provides hooks for an UNBUNDLED C2 Security product.
- the C2 features will be bundled into a future release of
- Solaris 2.x.
-
-
- Q. Will contract customers receive Solaris 2.1 automatically?
-
- A. Yes. Solaris 2.1 will by "pushed" to all contract customers.
