- In answer to all the private email queries I'm receiving.....
-
- The xenitec.xenitec.on.ca Internet gateway machine underwent
- some drastic surgery over the last two weeks. We have been
- back up (and apparently stable) since about 3am Mon Nov 15th.
-
- The reported Fujitsu drive crashes were indeed caused not by
- the failure of the drive itself (it's humming along quite nicely
- as I type this), but by failure of the Adaptec 1742A in "enhanced
- mode" using the EIAD driver, telling the Fujitsu to overwrite it's
- fdisk and divvy tables. Obviously, we've bugrep'd this failure.
- We are now running using a BusTek SCSI host adapter, which while
- not as blazingly fast with the standard "ad" driver, appears stable,
- and inspite of what the docs say, does support drives >1 gig with
- SCO UNIX, just so long as you have the correct current version.
- I should also state that the failures were in no way caused by
- the beta version of the new SCO ODT o/s; it's just fine. :-)
-
- In the interim, I took some rather great pains to ensure that
- no email was lost. The filesystems that house all email spools
- were on the drive we did _not_ loose, in anticipation of just
- such a necessity. As a result, full email, mmdf spool, and uucp
- spool recovery after each crash was possible. Mail which had not
- been delivered here (primarily via uunet.ca) was held and delivered
- when we came back up. In summary, I suspect that zero mail was lost.
-
- As for news, we endeavoured to deliver news prior to the upgrade
- shutdown. We likely did loose a bit of news due to the crashes,
- but expect that most of it would flow in anyway in the last and
- next few days, as indeed it seems to be doing.
-
- [with that info, please, no one ask me why the UUCP maps weren't
- published on time. :-) ]
