  18. because people are different, people will look for REASONS for the
  19. differences.

  21. The question of what causes homosexuality is irrelevant.  We could go
  22. on _ad nauseam_ about nature vs nurture, genes, hypothalami sizes, and
  23. the like till we're blue in the face and STILL not have answers which
  24. are to everyone's liking.

  26. The fact is that gays and lesbians exist, have ALWAYS existed, and
  27. WILL CONTINUE to exist as participants in our society.

  29. What I'm advocating here is equal treatment, equal rights.  We grant
  30. religious freedoms to all religions; it doesn't mean that we have to
  31. AGREE with every religion.  We respect freedom of speech without
  32. having to agree with everything everyone says.  It DOES mean, though,
  33. that we respect the right of individuals to decide for themselves.

  35. Now don't think for a moment that in countries like Denmark, where gay
  36. and lesbian couples have had full marriage rights since October 1990,
  37. that everyone thinks being gay is great, or would want their children
  38. to be gay.  On this contrary.  I think the difference is that the
  39. Danes realize that giving equal rights does not "reward" or imply that
  40. homosexuality is good, anymore than equal rights to ALL religions
  41. implies that any particular religion is "right" or "correct."
  42.  
  43. My personal feeling is that sexual orientation will remain an issue
  44. until people give up on the reward/punishment mentality of trying to
  45. coerce adults into the "correct" orientation and/or behaviour.
