  15. I try to use emacs on VAX vt100 terminal.
  16. the emacs is on DECstation with Ultrix4.2.
  17. I connect to the DECstation host, and type
  18. csh>emacs
  19.  
  20. but I got error message:
  21. X server not responding, check environ DISPLAY.
  22.  
  23. it seems to me that emacs on the DECstation
  24. think my vt100 terminal has X windows, so
  25. it try to open an X window for the editor.
  26.  
  27. I tried the options -d displayname and -nw
  28. to force the emacs not to open the X window.
  29. but I still got the same error message.
  30.  
  31. can someone give me a clue on where the problem
  32. is, and how to fix it.

  34. we have this problem on our system many times,
  35. by MANY TIMES I mean it sometimes comes and sometimes
  36. goes out without any notice. and every time
  37. we have some change in the network file system,
  38. this problem will come out.
