- Just thought I'd make my comments to the few who haven't got this thread in
- their kill files:-).
-
- The answers seem mainly to be in one of two camps - the "UNIX should be easy to
- use" camp, and the "lay off my OS" camp. The first might be nearer to "UNIX
- should be SAFE to use", but that's besides the point. There *is* work going on
- to try to improve the user interface of UNIX, though it's not everybody's
- idea of what's required - two examples that spring to mind are Sun and Rob Pike.
-
- Sun have flooded my disks with a huge amount of graphical tools which are
- supposed to be easy to use, and will supposedly improve my productivity. Maybe
- they would - I haven't tried them (I'm a shell person, myself).
-
- Rob (from the papers I've read) believes that bitmaps and mice are the way
- forward, and is trying hard to look at them without prejudice: best of luck.
-
- Enough stage-setting; time for some points (or opinions):
-
- (a) new users want something easy, simple and safe; experienced users like
- their fast, efficient command lines. There's no middle ground.
-
- (b) Just because the interface involves a mouse (or *whatever*), it doesn't
- mean that it doesn't have all speed, power or flexibility of a *pure*
- command line.
-
- I think (a) is probably the most urgent area for research. We need something
- that allows new users to come into UNIX, and start working with it without
- obscure error messages or cryptic commands, and from there, build up to the
- full power and simplicity of UNIX gracefully. Note that this is a general
- problem with any computer system.
-
- (b) is also hard: I'm still waiting to see a window system that supports the
- concept of a pipe, and personally, I don't have any answers.
-
- As a minor, final point on the subject of error messages, somebody mentioned
- that it would be nice for all the commands to be consistent in their handling.
- I agree. Since the Plan 9 group have had to do a major overhaul/rewrite of
- many of their utilities to support UTF, to unify the regular expressions, etc,
- it would be nice to think that they took the opportunity to unify the error
- handling, too.
-
- Enough waffle: back to the mv/cat problem.
- $ cat a b > a
- why?
- $
