- The histrionics described below relate to my workstation, a DS-5000/120
- with 32MB memory, 2 x rz25, 2 x rz58, a cd and an Exabyte. Software
- includes Ultrix 4.3, Pathworks 1.2, DECmsu 1.1 and INN. I will endeavour
- to describe the sequence of events associated with the recent upgrade of
- Ultrix to 4.3, but please understand that anything that happend more
- than a week ago is ancient history for my memory, and may not be
- remembered with total reliability :-(
-
- What prompts this message is an inability to login (while the most
- recent kernel is running) more than once, from the login screen, a
- DECserver 200 or a VMS machine via telnet or set host. The only new
- message I have been able to find in syslog is:
-
- Nov 18 08:22:00 localhost: init: '/usr/bin/login -P /usr/bin/Xprompter
- -C /usr/bin/dxsession -e :0' failing, sleeping
-
- I believe the sequence leading up to this problem is as follows:
-
- Upgrade from 4.2a (plus Motif) to 4.3 BASE (5.1.3 of guide to installing
- Ultrix)
- Kernel rebuild (this should have been done after the BASE_UPGRADE)
- BASE_UPGRADE
- Kernel rebuild
- Motif 1.1.3.1 and CAM software loaded
-
- Note that a kernel rebuild didn't follow the last step.
-
- A couple of weeks of uneventful use now ensued until I spotted during a
- reboot that SQL was noting the existence of a possible 60 semaphores
- whereas I previously had this set at 120 according to the SQL
- installation notes. Hence I changed the value of SEMMNS in /sys/h/sem.h
- back to 120 and rebuilt the kernel. Consequently, I noted the new
- message during the reboot referring to:
-
- HBA 'PMAZ-BA ' and DME 'PMAZ-BA ' attached on Controller 0.
-
- which I take to be a reference to CAM code having been enabled by the
- kernel rebuild. It was at this point that I experienced the login
- difficulties described above.
-
- My question is did I come unstuck by inadvertently rebuilding the kernel
- between the BASE and BASE_UPGRADE steps, or have I missed something in
- the CAM installation by not having the CAM installation guide referred
- to in the Ultrix 4.3 Release Notes. I rely on the Consolidated Software
- CD for my upgrades rather than an Ultrix-specific upgrade service and
- sometimes documentation either doesn't come, or arrives late.
-
- I would be grateful for any assistance with this problem as I can't
- build a useable kernel at the moment. The only possibility I can think
- of that I haven't tried is to unload CAM and rebuild the kernel.
