- This is one for the "Mama, don't let your boys grow up to be hackers!" file.
-
- I spent most of today trying to install an Archive ST525 SCSI tape on the
- first Bake-Off machine, the Swan Technologies 486 50DX/2 box. A hardware
- wizard I am not, but I can tell one end of a screwdriver from the other
- and I've installed SCSI drives before. "Piece o' cake!" I thought jauntily,
- flipping my trusty Phillips nonchalantly in one hand and actually managing to
- avoid stabbing myself with the pointy part.
-
- Hah. I should have known better...
-
- I will draw a kindly veil over the horrors of frustration which afflicted
- me and the helpful people at UHC UNIX over the next six hours. We played with
- SCSI ID jumpers, we built and rebuilt kernels, I joggled cables. At one point
- I actually found myself booting DOS (gasp!) in order to use DEBUG to get at
- the SCSI BIOS config utility.
-
- We eventually established that the drive was live, but UNIX wasn't seeing it
- at boot time. Neither was DOS. So the UHC people punted, suggesting I call
- Archive tech support. Which I did...
-
- ...and immediately discovered that all our effort had been for naught BECAUSE
- OF A CRITICAL ERROR IN THE INSTALLATION MANUAL. Seems the SCSI drive ID
- diagram, featuring jumpers JP3, JP2 and JP1, should actually refer to JP8
- JP7, and JP6. Makes BIG difference!
-
- Once I fixed this, the drive worked perfectly. And a nice drive it is, too;
- reads everything from DC600A/QIC-24 on up, writes 525meg, and is significantly
- faster than any QIC tape I've previously seen. (The UHC people rave about it;
- they say with a 1740 in SCSI-2 mode it *really* goes like a banshee)
-
- Lesson for today: RTFM doesn't help when the FM is @!&%#$! *wrong*!
-
- Grrrr...
