  12. experience with ISC Unix has not been good...

  18. basic Unix O/S and the Software Development Set.  I can't speak

  24. 3.0 is the latest version.  The takeover by SunSoft has confused
  25. Interactive greatly, and (in my opinion) very little has changed
  26. in the past two years, except for the system administration
  27. (which features color menus that take *forever* to execute).

  35. The documentation states that Windows can be run in real-mode,
  36. but I found that the Windows 3.1 install program crashes VPIX
  37. immediately.  VPIX performance has decreased noticably since 2.2.

  45. I was so disatisfied with my upgrade to ISC 3.0 that I asked
  46. SunSoft for my money back, and I explained to them in writing
  47. why I thought it was a shoddy product.  I added TCP/IP and NFS
  48. when I upgraded:  it took 4 phone calls to ISC support to get
  49. Unix working, and 6 phone calls and a FAX to get TCP/IP and NFS
  50. working.  But, my initial 30-day support period ran out before I
  51. could get everything working!  I have installed SCO Unix, AIX,
  52. AT&T Unix, VMS; so it wasn't as if I had no experience doing
  53. installations.

  55. To their credit however, my letter to SunSoft seems to have
  56. cause a stir, as they assigned a VP to "settle the issue" with
  57. me.  He assured me that Sun was concerned about the quality of
  58. their product and that they were dedicating many new resources
  59. to ISC Unix.  I have decided to give them the benefit of the
  60. doubt, as they seemed determined to see me satisfied as quickly
  61. as possible.  And, they did extend my initial support period so
  62. that I could get everything working.  Time will tell, however,
  63. as to how serious they are about ISC Unix.  Sun is under the gun
  64. with Solaris, and seem to be very sensitive about issues of
  65. quality.  I doubt that they would be thrilled to see a Sun
  66. flame-fest on Usenet.
