- This is not a total flame (see the last paragraph), but my recent
- experience with ISC Unix has not been good...

-
- They have fixed a few bugs, but little else has changed in the
- basic Unix O/S and the Software Development Set. I can't speak
- to the X-Windows implementation as I don't run X-Windows.
-

-
- 3.0 is the latest version. The takeover by SunSoft has confused
- Interactive greatly, and (in my opinion) very little has changed
- in the past two years, except for the system administration
- (which features color menus that take *forever* to execute).
-
- >Is ISC up to SVr4 yet?
-
- No. And, there is no ksh.
-
- >Has VP/ix been improved to provide Windows 3.0/3.1 support?
-
- The documentation states that Windows can be run in real-mode,
- but I found that the Windows 3.1 install program crashes VPIX
- immediately. VPIX performance has decreased noticably since 2.2.
-
- >Is there driver support for CD-ROM drives?
-
- The High Sierra file system is supported (but not from within VPIX).

- I was so disatisfied with my upgrade to ISC 3.0 that I asked
- SunSoft for my money back, and I explained to them in writing
- why I thought it was a shoddy product. I added TCP/IP and NFS
- when I upgraded: it took 4 phone calls to ISC support to get
- Unix working, and 6 phone calls and a FAX to get TCP/IP and NFS
- working. But, my initial 30-day support period ran out before I
- could get everything working! I have installed SCO Unix, AIX,
- AT&T Unix, VMS; so it wasn't as if I had no experience doing
- installations.
-
- To their credit however, my letter to SunSoft seems to have
- cause a stir, as they assigned a VP to "settle the issue" with
- me. He assured me that Sun was concerned about the quality of
- their product and that they were dedicating many new resources
- to ISC Unix. I have decided to give them the benefit of the
- doubt, as they seemed determined to see me satisfied as quickly
- as possible. And, they did extend my initial support period so
- that I could get everything working. Time will tell, however,
- as to how serious they are about ISC Unix. Sun is under the gun
- with Solaris, and seem to be very sensitive about issues of
- quality. I doubt that they would be thrilled to see a Sun
- flame-fest on Usenet.
-
- I actually don't want to see Sun fail with ISC or Solaris.
