-
- What do you think about the Byte magazine cover that asked:
- IS UNIX DEAD?

- I found the cover to be annoying at best. It *prevented* me from
- buying the magazine - I was angry, and didn't want to contribute
- to a group intent on convincing those unaware that Unix is dying
- out (so it appeared, anyway).
-
- I have been unimpressed with Byte since it became primarily
- dedicated to IBM and MS, which has been for quite some time.
- They have failed the community of computer users by not reporting
- on alternative computing platforms and operat-ing systems
- repeatedly, and when they do make a report, they imply it is
- dying out.
-
- My impression is that many a "technically-challenged" :)
- execudroid will read this and think "Hmmm...once NT is out,
- that'll mean the end of Unix completely" which is, of course,
- untrue. This theory can be supported by way of example: your
- editor friend at McGraw-Hill, who admittedly knows little about
- computers, but knows enough that Byte is an authoritative journal
- on computing (which it is not, of course), wonders about the
- success of a book on Unix based on the contents of a magazine
- article.
-
- Because I have not actually read the article, I cannot make
- comments on it. I can only say that the cover was offensive
- (because it implies something untrue) and I'd agree with your
- assessment that it's on a par with (or below) "Is Elvis
- alive...".
-
- I'm sorry I don't have the time to express professionally and
- eloquently my true feelings towards Byte, and specifically the
- cover of the latest issue.
