  11. We have a network in which hosts come up without a server (i.e. are
  12. disk- and datafull).  In this event the domainname is null, NIS
  13. (Yellow Pages) isn't running and the /etc/hosts file contains a
  14. valid list of other hosts on the network.

  16. 'ping'ing other hosts works fine and tracing the ping I can see that
  17. the hosts file is indeed being read.  Code which used 'gethostbyaddr',
  18. however, doesn't work although I can see that the hosts file is being
  19. read again.

  21. Anyone know why 'gethostbyaddr' doesn't work?  I understood that the
  22. system is first supposed to try NIS and then the hosts file.
