-
- 0. Make sure you have enough wires (8-10) from the modem to the port
- (Transmit, Receive, Ground, Request-to-Send, Clear-to-Send,
- Data-Terminal-Ready, Data-Set-Ready, Carrier-Detect). A straight
- 25-wire flat cable should do just fine.
-
- On the other side, you might try just 3 wires (transmit, receive,
- ground) with jumpers connecting the following together ON THE HOST
- END OF THE CABLE:
-
- a. Clear-To-Send, Request-To-Send, Data-Set-Ready
- b. Carrier-Detect, Data-Terminal-Ready
-
- You will also need to set the modem to ignore DTR if you go 3-wire
- so that it will answer the ring and go off-hook.
-
- 1. Set the Runtime and Login strings in smit to have 'clocal'.
-
- 2. (Maybe) Set the Runtime and Login strings in smit to NOT have 'hupcl'
-
- 3. Try to set the Discovery modem so that the CD signal is ALWAYS ON
- (this will help keep the port open)
-
- 4. Try to set the Discovery modem so that it does NOT echo your commands
- (Hayes command: ATE0). Result codes are OK, but if the modem echoes
- the commands, the login string will be echoed by the modem to the port
- which will think it is trying to log in and redisplay the login string
- to the modem which will echo back to the port which will think ....
-
- I try to turn as many modem signals (DTR, CD, etc.) permanently on. Then, I
- work backwards to see what I can 'get away with.' But I always need to make
- sure the modem does not echo my commands. Results are OK, but not commands.
-
- Good luck.
