- I am very familiar with unix and how a distributed computing
- solution could be setup on our campus and I would like
- to hear from someone who has experience in how/if VMS
- would handle a campus wide solution where perhaps VaxStations/X-terminals/PCs
- were placed on Desktops. Specifically how well are the following
- handled:
-
- -a distributed password database(like NIS)
- -having one home directory(like NFS or AFS)
- -remote installation of application software on local
- workstation disks.
- -OS upgrades of remote Vaxstations
- -integration with DECstations?(this is really a side issue to my question)
- -other?
-
- I am really interested in this because the central Computing Services
- is interested in a big bucks centralized solution providing file
- service and compute service to most of the campus. As soon as they
- realize that there is a network bottleneck I am curious how easy it
- will be to distribute the file serving out closer to the PCs/Vaxstations/
- X-terminals.
-
- Personally I disagree totally with the plan but I will probably
- have to live with it due to how funding is handled.
-
- If I receive enough response I will summarize. Thanks in advance.
