- Summary: What third-party security software is there?
- Keywords: security account software
- Lines: 43
-
- What third-party user account security software is available for UNIX,
- especially but not limited to SunOS?
-
- Preferably, the software should meet the following requirements:
-
- - specifiable minimum password length
- - password aging on an individual username basis
- - account disabling after N unsuccessful login attempts
- - logging of unsuccessful login attempts
-
- <Yes, I know the last one is bad, but it is unfortunately the standard
- at this site>.
-
- Other "nice" features would be:
-
- - automatic "your password will expire in N days" messages at login
- - screening of "obvious" passwords - e.g. username or GCOS field
- - screening of passwords against a site-modifiable dictionary
- - screening of passwords against previously used passwords
- - expiration date set on accounts
- - synchronisation of password across all UNIX systems (e.g. SCO, AIX,
- SunOS)
- - capability to pre-expire passwords, e.g. if the Help Desk has to
- set the password after a user forgets it
-
- ...in other words, we want a password system much like that provided by VMS.
-
- A related question is the availability of software to synchronise UNIX
- passwords to other platforms - e.g. IBM mainframe. Does anyone know of any?
-
- Please respond by email; if there is sufficient interest I will summarise
- and post.
