- My thanks to all of you who responded to my request for
- advice on NSE.
-
- Here is what I have found out.
-
-
- 1. Sun is end-of-lifing (killing) NSE
- 2. Official release of successor product is real soon,
- sunfolk say "a couple of weeks" or "a couple of
- days".
- 3. Successor product is code-named "Aviary"
- 4. Sunfolk act uncomfortable when you ask them if
- "TeamWare" is the name of the new product.
- As though you and they are not supposed to know
- that yet.
- 5. There is upgrade path from NSE to Aviary.
- 6. Aviary is cheaper than NSE, sunfolk say.
- 7. The sunpitch: Aviary relies on a simpler model
- than NSE, hence is much easier and much more
- robust.
-
- 8. Users report NSE very difficult to administer,
- buggy, requires emergency attention from
- Sun from time to time, requires much disk
- space, a net loss for less than 4 programmers,
- problematical when you have to restore.
-
- 9. My appeal for favorable critiques of NSE generated
- zero responses.
-
- 10. Competitors. One respondent has tried ClearCase
- by Atria and gives it a strong favorable review.
- For info: uunet!viewpnt!support or support@atria.com
-
- 11. More info on Sun's successor to NSE...
- Check with the Sun "CASE Ambassador" via your
- local Sun rep.
