  10. A quick question:  I would like to know whether I should be setting up
  11. SLIP or UUCP from my home NeXT to work/school.  Here is the situation:

  13. NeXT cube at home, gig hard disk, NO OD (I just sold it :-)
  14. (I was all set to buy a Floptical only to find out that PLI isn't
  15. delivering them.)  
  16. From 1.1.93 my central goes ISDN digital...
  17. I have a 2400 modem and cable.  
  18. I need to be able to back up one way or another.
  19. The host machine at school will most likely be a Sun.

  21. From now until the new year, I have to have at the minimum a way to
  22. transfer files to/from home.  I don't have a floppy, nor will I buy
  23. one.  I would like to buy a Floptical, if PLI would be finished soon.
  24. Mostly these files are .ps output, and some stuff like mail, new
  25. apps, etc.

  27. The University is setting up a SLIP server, which will also handle UUCP.
  28. I have discussed the possibility of setting up a communication with
  29. them and they are positive, but we don't know if SLIP or UUCP is
  30. most appropriate.  The main problem is: 
  31. 1. slow (2400) modem and 
  32. 2. I don't have call out possibility (i.e. only incoming calls) so the
  33. U has to initiate all connections.  I know that a UUCP link would
  34. work fine for mail, and it isn't  a problem to be called in the
  35. middle of the day or in the middle of the night, when I wouldn't
  36. otherwise use the phone.  But it will be a mess extracting .ps from NeXT
  37. mail attatchments (I don't usually use a NeXT at work  :-( to print out,
  38. and NeXTmail encoding (well, I could of course just uuencode them) new
  39. apps (Games! ;-) things to be transferred to my home machine.  Also,
  40. as I recall from Seebass, Garth, & Snyder (Unix Sys admin bible), one
  41. receiving a UUCP connection should offer the service to others, something
  42. I can't as long as I'm restricted from dialing out.  A moral dilemma.
  43. If SLIP is possible, would it be better to set it up?  Would it work in
  44. the situation I have described?
