  12. Beware the SCSI chain flaking out or the scanner overheating (at "104" degrees  
  13. _internally_, e.g., 90 degrees room temperature (the scanner is self-heating  
  14. since it has an internal fluorescent bulb which is always on when the scanner  
  15. is on)).  In my experience, either of these problems while using PowerScan  
  16. reduces your NeXT to a hung PC --- it hard core hangs (all applications freeze,  
  17. menus won't activate, keyboard is ignored;  I believe even the NMI keys don't  
  18. work!).

  20. I get the impression the scanner or PowerScan is/are (somehow) hanging the SCSI  
  21. bus (thus effectively disabling all SCSI devices, including the hard disks  
  22. :-().  I think this problem causes all unsaved and unsync'ed (by the OS) work  
  23. to be lost --- even that of other applications or any background processes.   
  24. Needless to say, PowerScan does not deal gracefully with scanner SCSI  
  25. communications problems.

  27. So, now before using PowerScan, I disconnect my modem (so I don't lose incoming  
  28. information, e.g., e-mail), and save all my work in other applications.  Of  
  29. course, now my NeXTstation becomes no more than a flakey, single-tasking PC,  
  30. but so it goes to use my scanner...  Also, I leave my scanner off when not in  
  31. use.

  33. I reported this problem to HSD (most recently on 20 October).  I have no idea  
  34. what (if any) progress is being made to solve it.

  36. If anybody can shed more light on these problems (or even has solutions, heaven  
  37. forbid :-), please let me know!
