- Hi All,
-
- Please reply direct to me - I will a) send a summary of my responses to
- anyone who asks, or b) if I get more than 5 summary requests, I will post the
- summary to comp.sys.mac.hardware - Thanks!
-
- I have a Mac Classic (not a Classic II), 4/40, System 7.0.1, with a PLP
- LS and though a switchbox a modem and a CasioLink cable. Std (small) kybd &
- mouse.
-
- Ocassionally (20% of the time?), when I turn it ON, I get no-change
- screen (ie, still black), and a faint "tick" sound. A LOT like the old
- crowbarring sound we used to get when we upped the power in the old Mac Plusses
- too high, just much quieter. Of Course, the unit is immediately shut off, and
- if unplugged from the wall for 5-10 seconds, and tried again, it always works.
- Also, this has happened in the middle of the session (ie, screen goes black,
- ticking heard), but much less often (maybe 3 times so far).
-
- The unit is about 18 mos old. We moved (w/ the unit in its original
- box, by hand, in my car), and it didn't start happening until after the move,
- but not even then did it start right away.
-
- The unit has always been on a surge/spike protector, and as of
- yesterday, has been on a UPS system ( it still went black this AM, though).
-
- I get the feeling that perhaps the power of our heat pump cycle on or
- off (sag or surge) might be responsible, maybe (through a TrippLite UPS?)?
- Humidity? Dust / CatHair (it is fairly clean inside, I just checked).
-
- I would like to maybe _lower_ the internal power a little bit, but
- when I opened it up, all of the pots on the PS board are unlabeled (except for
- things like P17, P13.... Can anyone enlighten me as to which ones are what,
- and since I no longer have access to a _digitial_ voltmeter, give the rotation
- for increase / decrease power on the appriopriate one (I'm gonna have to
- eyeball it). Unless of course there is a good tech book about the Classic (I
- have the one about the Pluses / SE by Larry Pina -no use here)... Sigh, I wish
- the guts of the Classic were labeled like the Plus - real easy to work with!
- But, I did notice (after putting it back together), that the old "battery
- compartment cover" actually covers access holes to the pots - so I won't have
- to take the cover off to do the adjustment?
-
- Oh Well, Thank you for your time & replies.
-
- Please, again, reply directly to me and I will summarize!
