- Inserting a 68030:
- What I have heard for this one is simple, but the procedure requires
- a skilled de/solderer. You may have noticed that there is a place for a
- socket next to the 68020 on the Sun 3/60 mainboard. This is for a 68030
- (which I gather Sun never used). Pull the solder out of all the holes.
- Insert a 68030 socket. Take out your 68020. Put a 68030 (>= 20 MHz) in
- the 030 socket. That's it I think. I have heard that no jumpers need be
- set or traces cut.
-
- Wrong. You need to wire up CIIN* on the 68030 to a place that I have
- not fully determined yet (there are three possible places), and you also
- have to make 6 kernel binary patches to make the data cache work.
-
- A 68030 is only about 2% faster than a 68020 unless you turn it's data cache
- on -- in which case it is up to about 15% faster. But, if you turn on the
- data cache, you need to make DAMN sure that CIIN* on the 68030 is wired up
- properly. I've mailed very detailed instructions to one person who I think
- is going to try it out... I only have one 3/60 which I need up all the time,
- so I cannot really try what I've found out.. We'll let people know (by
- posting) when/if we find something that does work.
