- Summary: Info still needed...
-
- So far I have received 8 replies requesting information on speeding up
- the Sun 3, but no replies containing new information.
-
- I'm sure someone must have saved the pertinent article(s) posted in
- comp.sys.m68k not long ago. My newsserver no longer has those articles
- and a search with "archie" came up negative.
-
- IF YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE, PLEASE, PLEASE REPOST IT.
-
- I'll summarize what I have heard so far. This is not guaranteed correct,
- so don't change any hardware based upon what I say here. And feel free
- to correct me where I go wrong or have questions.
-
- Starting from the simplest:
-
- Replacing the CPU crystal:
- The Sun 3/60 (and maybe others) can be sped up some by replacing the
- CPU crystal. I believe that this is a 4 pin 40 MHz part. It can
- successfully be replaced by (up to) a 50 MHz part. This would drive the
- CPU at 25 MHz. Here is the confusion: are the CPU and FPU clocked
- separately? Does the memory bus run at the same speed and the CPU? If
- so, should memory be replaced by faster (80ns maybe) chips? Hmmm.
-
- Inserting a 68030:
- What I have heard for this one is simple, but the procedure requires
- a skilled de/solderer. You may have noticed that there is a place for a
- socket next to the 68020 on the Sun 3/60 mainboard. This is for a 68030
- (which I gather Sun never used). Pull the solder out of all the holes.
- Insert a 68030 socket. Take out your 68020. Put a 68030 (>= 20 MHz) in
- the 030 socket. That's it I think. I have heard that no jumpers need be
- set or traces cut.
-
- SCSI controller IC:
- I've heard there's a newer model of the SCSI controller chip used in
- the 3/60 that is backwardly compatible. I do not know the procedure to
- replace the chip. I gather that it needs to be enabled in software
- requiring a kernel patch.
-
- Please add to / correct all this.
