- The reason for the slowdown is MS-DOS 5.0's use of UMBs. Check your
- EMM386.SYS line in your CONFIG.SYS. You CAN'T use the NOEMS switch as the
- DOS extender in AutoCAD will bomb. However, if you DON'T use the NOEMS,
- then DOS 5.0 will create simulated EMS memory of at least 64K.
-
- AutoCAD looks first for EMS memory, and if I read the docs right, will
- ignore XMS (extended) memory if it finds EMS. Therefore, if you use
- EMM386.SYS, convert ALL (or as much as you can possibly spare) your XMS
- memory to EMS.
-
- Your next choice is to not use EMM386.SYS at all (i.e., don't load DOS into
- high memory and don't use UMBs at all - only use conventional memory).
- Then AutoCAD can access all your XMS as XMS.
-
- Finally, you could purchase the Windows extension to AutoCAD and run it as
- a Windows 3.x application with speed reduction (but not as slow as you
- mention).
-
- I installed AutoCAD v11 and Windows 3.0 (which perfers NOEMS, and XMS) on a
- machine and had to compromise the performance of both to run them under the
- same CONFIG.SYS.
-
- Fun isn't it?
