- Contrary to belief, most (newer) XT motherboards can be ditched for a 286 or
- 386 while keeping the Power suply.
-
- - The XT motherboard must be a "Turbo" type with 8 slots. The spacing between
- a 5-slot and a 8-slot is DIFFERENT!
- - Your XT controller will work - if you tell your CMOS you have NO DRIVES
- ATTACHED (The CMOS drive type applies ONLY to IDE drives). There are EPROMs
- on the HD controller that take care of things.
- - The floppy controller won't accept HD drives (you're stuck with 360/720k).
- You STILL have to tell the machine you got 360 5 1/4 and or 720 3 1/2.
- - You will have to flip your keyboard DIP from XT to AT or BUY a new
- keyboard if it's an XT only.
- - The power supply shoud be good enough for a 286 or 386sx - maybe not for
- a 486-66...
-
- It might be possible to recycle your XT 640K of memory - I dunno
- how - anybody know?
