- I received a flurry of responses from my posting about the Edsun CEG
- that I thought might be of value to those who are interested. Apparently, CEG
- is far from dead and appears to have emerged in technology that is cutting
- edge. Here were some of the uses of CEG currently:
-
- - Hughes is developing a CEG-based imaging system for transmission of full
- color video over standard copper phone lines. There is an outside
- developer working with them on this and I'm sure that the government is
- involved. The bandwidth for telephone lines is so small that the system
- will probably end up wireless.
-
- - A small company based in VA claims to have developed a full color virtual
- reality system using CEG to "smooth the jagged line edges" as to make the
- VR image more realistic. They claim to have 25 frames per second using the
- "flight helmet" from Virtual Research and a 486/33.
-
- - An individual claims to be working on an anti-aliased font driver for
- Windows 3.1 similar to the anti-aliased fonts used by the ATI Ultra. He
- says that the driver is in beta now and will be released by a company
- called Retco Sales early in 1993.
-
- - The bulk of the responses were "what have you heard" types, so that is why I
- am posting this followup. Almost all the responses were positive (about 10)
- and a few were negative (four). Seems like CEG would be more popular if more
- people developed software for it. The technical people love it.
-
-
- This is a quote from the individual working on the VR system about
- why CEG was used:
-
- "CEG allows [the system] to display realistic true-color images
- without the need for massive amounts of memory and high bandwidth"
-
-
- I have omitted all of the company and individual's names who responded
- due to a followup message from one of them asking that his name and company be
- omitted so that he would not get tons of phone calls. I was able to find the
- phone number for Retco Sales. They are based in Santa Rosa, CA. Their number
- is: (707) 579-2230
-
-
- Thanks to all who responded!!!
