- I'm not sure, but I think that it is in the $10-$20 range. Note
- that this only gets you access to the really basic stuff, like games,
- news, home shopping, limited email (Internet mail is extra), etc..
-
- Forum access, which is where I believe all of the good stuff is
- (like programs, support, etc.), costs extra. If you plan on accessing
- the forums a lot, you might be better off with the
- "pay-for-what-you-use" plan. It's not cheap, but, as you'll probably be
- paying the same (large) amount for forum access no matter what billing
- plan you choose, you don't pay the $7.95/month.
-
- I use Compuserve to get software/hardware support, and, for the
- most part, I've gotten pretty good service. However, I do *PAY* for it.
- It is NOT cheap, but I feel that it's worth it because:
-
- * I've got access to the latest drivers for my PAS16 soundcard/CDROM.
-
- * I've got access to the latest patches for games. I don't have to wait
- a week or so for someone to upload them to wuarchive or whereever,
- assuming that someone even does so.
-
- * I can ask support questions by posting a message, which I can do when
- it is convenient to me. I don't have to call up some phone number,
- only to get a busy signal or to be placed on indefinite hold. While
- it may take a couple of days to a week to get an answer (in some
- cases, it might only be hours), I'd rather wait a few days than to try
- calling up again and again at some inconvenient hour.
-
- * I've got access to the latest Microsoft printer and display drivers
- for Windows.
-
- * I've got access to Microsoft's "Knowledge Base", which is a database
- of problems and/or solutions with respect to various MS programs
- (Windows, MS Word, MS Project, etc.).
-
- If you do access the Compuserve forums, get one of the "auto-logon"
- programs like ATO or OZCIS (both are available from simtel20). Beware,
- though. They can save you money, or they can make you spend more money,
- by making Compuserve easy enough to use that you access more of it.

-
- No, and the prices vary according to which network you use to
- connect to Compuserve. If you use Compuserve's network, which is
- connected to major cities and even to some fringe areas (like where I
- am), the cost is something like an additional $0.50/hour.
