- Hi all,
-
- I recently acquired an AST ADVANTAGE 16 bit multi-card. On the solder
- side of the card is a decal with ADV-128 on it, possibly it's the model
- number. On the component side, there is a decal that reads
- "202051-001 Rev. P". Printed on the solder side of the card is
- "Copyright 1984". (Don't laugh!) This is a full length card.
-
- It has a bunch of DIP sockets, which I believe are for DRAM. I don't
- know the size or speed for the DRAM, nor do I know how the banks are
- configured. (Three rows of 18 sockets, maybe each row is a pair of
- banks?)
-
- On the end of the card, there is one 9 pin male port (serial?) and one
- 25 pin female port (parallel?). Additionally, there is a 25 pin male
- port attached to a 9 pin ribbon cable (serial?). There are two empty
- sockets that appear to be UART sockets, that I would like to put 16550s
- in. Only problem is they aren't marked. Which direction do the chips
- go in? Same for the companion chips (I forget what they are called).
- Do they face the same way all the other chips do?
-
- Between the "companion chip" sockets and the memory sockets, there are
- two empty sockets. What are these for? One is 16 pin, the other is
- 20 pin.
-
- There are three sets of DIP switches. What are these for? And what
- about all these jumpers? (It would have been nice if something
- meaningful were printed next to them besides jumper numbers.) J5
- (40 pins) and J4 (16 pins) look like cables attach to them. What cables?
- TP1-3, J6, and J8 look like jumpers.
-
- I got this card as part of a component trade and, as you can tell,
- didn't get any documentation. Now that I've had a better look at it,
- I see that I need it. If someone has documentation for this beastie,
- please send me mail. Due to the number of questions, it may be easier
- to send a photocopy via snail mail. I will, of course, compensate
- for copying and postage expenses. And I will be most greatful for
- any help with this matter.
-
- I had some experience with a similar type of card (different manufacturer,
- same time period) that required software drivers (DOS) or a boot ROM
- (other operating systems) in order to work. I use 386BSD and Linux. If
- this thing requires drivers, please stop me now.
-
- Thanks in advance,
-
