- I have an ancient XT clone lying around (I know I know) and have
- suddenly found myself with the need to do some occasional development
- for MSDOS systems (for the HP95 palmtop) This machine has recently
- returned from the friends I lent it to when I purchased my lovely Mac
- IIci system. What I'd like to do is get it up to the point where I can
- expect reasonable compile times for short programs (we are talking a
- palmtop here) After being spoiled on the Mac, I have no interest in
- windows, VGA or any half baked GUI equipment. I'd like to save my
- hercules board and monitor but the rest is liable to go.
-
- If I remember my DOS days correctly I can't just swap the motherboard
- out for a 286/386 board. I need to replace the power supply as well as
- the hard/floppy controller. At that point it almost seems worth it to
- get a "bare bones system" of new case, power supply, single floppy and
- motherboard. I could see my way clear to ditching the Seagate ST251
- although it still runs well. If I swapped out parts, could I still use
- this drive? Would I even want to? Could I put in a 3.5" disk drive to
- facilitate transfer <-> Mac?
-
- Any recommendations would be appreciated, names of companies or
- products especially. If someone has a reasonably speedy basic system
- that would fit my needs and would like to sell it - let me know.
-
- WHAT I HAVE WHAT I NEED
- 8088 8Mhz 80286 around 16Mhz or better
- 640k RAM 640K
- 20Meg HD at least 20 mg
- Par Port Need a serial port as well
- 2400 bps int modem everything else should transfer
- Hercules Graphics Card & Monitor
- SI (4.5) ratings
- CI: 1.7
- DI: 1.4
-
- Should I just scrounge a computer shopper and flip through ads? I
- still would need to know whether I needed a new hard/floppy controller
- and/or power supply though.
