- Has anyone been using a tape backup drive with their PC? Look at this-
-
- I bought some pre-formatted DC2120 tapes with the ximat format.
- (120MB from "3M"). I assumed the data I was backing up onto them with Central
- Point Backup was reliable. I backed up about 30 MB onto several of these tapes
- with a new Summit Express 250 Drive. This is a lot like the C.M.S. Jumbo 250
- tape drive. Anyhow, when restoring the data and using "compare" with
- Central Point Backup, I get about 5-6 files that are bad on one tape
- and 2-3 files that are bad on another, etc... This is not reliable!
- Please note, I did not format the tapes on my drive. According to the
- documentation pre-formatted tapes should work fine (QIC-80).
-
- However, *UNLESS* I format the tapes on this drive, (which takes about 2hrs),
- I get lots of mismatches in the data when it's restored or compared with the
- original data. (ie: the data is corrupted) My guess is -- the tape head is
- mis-aligned or something like this. Did I get a bad drive? Is this normal
- to have to format a formatted tape on an individual drive for reliability?
- Does anyone out there use pre-formatted tapes, and have found them reliable?
- <or> Does everyone format the tape on their particular drive? I thought these
- tape backup drives were suppose to be very reliable. So far, the tape drive
- has been a horrible nightmare. I have been testing and testing, and it
- appears the problem is not my machine, or my DOS environment *BUT* that the
- tapes need to be formatted on this drive first!! Any opinions?
-
- All opinions expressed or otherwise implied are my own.
