- The early BOCA 14.4K modems came with a 16540 UART (only 1 byte buffer), not a
- 16550.

- I do believe that Boca has a program for upgrading the old 16540 UARTs.
- If your UART is socketed, you can just buy one and plug it in (they are pin

- From your description of CRC errors on transfers, you may have the 16540 and
- not the 16550. (or you may have the 16550 but your communication program may
- not be 16550 aware and thus is not turning on the 16 byte buffer).

- If you have Windows, there is a little dos program in the windows directory
- called MSD (microsoft system diagnostics). It's pretty simple, just shows what
- hardware you have installed. But it DOES detect and report what UARTs are on
- the various serial ports.
