- Since a number of people have requested the info that I received from
- Gateway Tech support with regard to Telepath settings, etc. I will post
- it here:
-
- The Problem: I was having problems staying connected to the UofA's bank
- of plain vanilla 9600's, with connections usually disconnecting after an
- hour or so of download time (using Zmodem) from the first day I got my
- machine. Sometimes while trying to send commands to the modem, the
- machine would lock up and the reset button would have to be pressed
- (Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work). On the third day of using the modem, it went
- completely dead.
-
- The Solution: We discovered that the IRQ for COM1 (the telepath) wasn't
- set to 5 as it should have been and this seemed to solve the problem of my
- dead modem. Since I was talking to the tech on my only phone line, we
- couldn't test to see if this solved the connection problems, so he told me
- a number of setup strings to try to get the connection to work:
-
- ATN0S37=11&Q6&K0%C0 for 14400
-
- replace the 11 with 9 for 9600
- 8 for 4800
- 6 for 2400
- 5 for 1200
-
- The &Q6&K0%C0 part disables error correction, compression, etc. I don't
- need this stuff because I only call the afore mentioned 9600's.
-
- Apparently (I guess since the Telepath doesn't have the buffered serial
- UART) screen savers often interfere with connections, and should be
- turned off.
-
- He also suggested that if the telephone line connections weren't of very
- good quality, there would be problems at high baud rates.
-
- This is all I know, hope it helps. I haven't had a problem since the IRQ
- was set to 5.
