- I'm planning a major upgrade of my PC in preparation for serious OS's
- which should be out fairly soon. I have a few questions on my provisionally
- planned hardware - can anyone answer them, or give me comments...
-
-
- 1. Apaptec 1542B SCSI interface
-
- a. What's in the "kit" over and above the base board? Do I need
- the software if the OS claims to support this card? Won't
- the drivers be in the OS? ªSolaris 2.0 specificallyß.
-
- b. Does this controller cache? What makes it much more
- expensive that some of the cheaper ones? Some are MUCH less
- expensive.
-
- c. How could a system be configured to boot from a SCSI drive?
- ROMs seem not to know about them...Sorry ignorance on this one.
-
-
- 2. CD-ROM
-
- a. I'm looking for a SCSI CD-ROM drive, preferably (but not
- essentially) esternal. Any ideas?
-
- b. Some CD-ROM drives specify different capacities. How can
- this work? Does it mean a lower capacity device (like many
- SCSI models) is limited in the CDs it can read?
-
-
- 3. Speedstore 24X graphics card
-
- a. Is is VESA compatible?
-
- b. Is it fast enough for X-Windows work?
-
-
- Any other general comments about "gotchas" or "bewares" would be VERY much
- appreciated. I'm planning to upgrade to a 50 MHz 486. Don't really know
- if I should go for local-bus - comments appreciated on this too. Problem
- seems to be that one is then limited to the local-bus controllers which
- don't seem to be as supported or flexible as the (E)ISA bus varieties.
-
- Please answer directly to KKEYTE@ESOC.BITNET If there is enough useful
- response I'll post back a summary.
-
-
- Thanks. I'm grateful for your help.
