- We've had a Gateway 2000 25MHz 386 machine running for about 3 years now. Except
- for the installation of a tape drive after-the-fact, it has essentially been running
- 24 hours/day for the entire time (the monitor has been turned off for about a month
- once per year, otherwise it, too, has been on for the entire time (albeit
- "screenblanked" (running UNIX)).
-
- We've had zero problems with the machine.
-
- When we initially bought the machine we decided to upgrade to a bigger cache but didn't
- call fast enough with our change-order; they told us to just refuse shipment and they'd
- get the different motherboard installed as soon as it returned. We did so and so did they.
-
- They are now a BIG player in the PC clone market, we believe largely through these
- initial Customer Service interactions (not to mention the VERY competitive prices they
- had back then). Company personalities can and often do change with massive growth, however
- much of what I've read in both the literature and "on the net" imply that Gateway
- retains much of its early good practices.
-
- Though we'd still do "market research" prior to buying, I don't think we'd hesitate
- buying our next system(s) through them (said as a satisfied customer, not a shill)
