- I've been playing with my brother's Gateway 486/50 for a while now. Seems
- like a nice machine, but the tech support people are totally incompetent.
- When he received the machine, the dip switches on the motherboard were set
- for the wrong amount of memory, confusing the system to no end. SO: my
- brother calls tech support, reads them the error messages on boot; they
- decide it is a motherboard problem, send him a new motherboard, and have him
- switch motherboards. Guess what: same problem! My brother gets suspicious
- and checks the dip switch settings with the manual - they are wrong. Sets
- them correctly, machine works fine.
- Then, a couple of weeks ago, we are playing around with Linux, and
- need to boot off the 3.5" drive: drive B. Well, we can't get it to boot off
- drive b:, so I call tech support and ask them whether this is normal. He
- says no, and starts asking me stuff we already tried: play with cmos
- settings, etc. Finally, he has us pull the case, reset cables, etc. (I was
- going to do that, but wanted to see if there actually was a problem before
- bothering). Then he remembers something, or thinks about the first question
- I asked him half an hour ago, or something, and tells me that you can
- actually only boot off of drive a:, and to boot off of the 3.5" drive we
- should switch the cables. I was flabbergasted! Why couldn't he have just
- said that when I asked him point-blank the first thing???
- Oh well, the machine itself is pretty cool. :)
