Another perspective here.  The problem is that HP's timeout for the
problem is inappropriate to the nature of the problem.  Why should
HP's X server be in lala-land for so long?

:can request OW3 patch 100444 (or whatever is the current
:replacement) from Sun to fix the problem.  I believe that
:this patch has been rolled in to OW 3.0.1 on their current
:OS release.
