- We received a brand new 730 yesterday, and got it set up and running with
- no problems. HP VUE was running, and everything worked and looked great.
-
- That was yesterday. Today I installed our ATR (Apollo Token Ring) interface
- and rebooted the system. Everything still worked even after the installation,
- and I was able to ftp and rlogin to our 400s via the token ring. I
- then connected a cable to the thin ethernet port and tried to bring that
- connection up, with no luck.
-
- At some time during this process, I wanted to bring up the environment
- editor tool (I don't know what it's really called -- it's the artist's
- palette button on the control bar) to change something and it refused to
- come up. Not only that, the logout button on the control bar started
- blinking pink, but no messages were displayed. I tried logging out to
- fix the problem, only to discover that the windowing system would no
- longer start up.
-
- What's happening now:
-
- * I get the standard graphical login window
- * I enter username and password
- * The "Starting the VUE" screen appears
- * A message box appears, which says:
-
- "The session manager is unable to start the HP VUE
- messaging system."
-
- Then it tells me to contact my System Administrator (that would be me),
- or to look in the HP VUE System Administration Manual (which we don't
- have). HP claims that while the new hardware is naturally under warranty,
- we don't have software support. So I turn to you ... can anyone tell
- me what's going on?
-
- Since this has happened, I have tried several things:
-
- * Rebooting
- * Power cycling
- * De-installing the ATR software (to be precise, reconfiguring
- the EISA to forget about the ATR card) and power cycling
-
- The ATR card itself is still physically installed in the machine, and
- I'm not keen on removing it unless someone is sure that it is causing
- the problem. I tend to doubt it since the machine rebooted with no
- problems after I installed the card.
-
- Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please post replies or mail to
- me directly.
