- Well, I managed to transfer my data files from my 1541 to my 1581 by writing
- a little program. (a slow one). The database manager I have used since the
- beginning of time on my c64 is one from
- Microspec, Database version 1.001, 1982
- 2905 Ports O'call ct.
- Plano, Tx. 75075.
- I tried writing a couple of years back and got a 'no one called that at
- that address' on my returned envelope. This program saves the data as random
- files, i.e., no directory record of it, and dumps the data directly to the
- disk sectors. This limits the no. of records to 664 minus tracks 17, 18, and
- most of 19, which it uses for file definitions, etc.
- Well, I'm running out of room for more records, and don't want to go to another disk.
- When I ran the program using the 1581, the program did not recognize any
- thing on track one after sector 20, in other words, the program thought it had
- a 1541. Since the program doesn't seem to decompile using any decompiler that
- I have, I don't want to disect 108 blocks of code to tell the program that I
- have 40 sectors/track.
- My questions,
- 1.) anyone else ever see this program before or any updates to it?
- 2.) is there another database program out there that I could use on my
- 1581 that would recognize the drive for what it is?
- 3.) anyone have a favorite database program?
- I guess since I've successfully read the old data from the 1541, I could
- put it in any format that another program could read. Too many of the
- programs I've seen use sequential files for data. This seems that it could
- get slow when the files are > 500 blocks long.
- Thanks for any info.
