- :-) :-) :-) Stephen- that's the most humorous and realistic
- commentary on the RISC upgrade I've yet heard! A fellow I
- met from Bell Labs said "it's a great upgrade-it turns your
- CPU bound machine into an I/O bound machine".
-
- We run a 3B2 shop around here, and I think converting would be
- silly. First of all, all my binaries break. Unlike DEC
- and Alpha, I don't think a binary translator is provided. Then,
- look at the CPU you get--an R3000! Not even an R4000! So, I
- get to spend $$$$$ to upgrade my machine to a new level of obsolescence.
-
- Now, I'll make my standard pitch to NCR: USL has a working
- System V, Release 4.1 for the WE32x00-based 3B2 computers, both
- V2 and V3 systems. I know, because I'm running it. However,
- it is only available (at a reasonable price) to universities like
- us. It would be up to NCR to package it and distribute it as
- a binary product. How about it? Let's conduct a little straw
- poll: How many 3B2 users out there would be willing to upgrade
- to SVR4, and how much would you be willing to pay?
