- Hmmm, in my opinion piracy is whatever results in someone using software that
- they did not pay for, the means to getting there are court issues.
-
- Perhaps more discussion should be emphasized on solutions to piracy, it's not
- likely that the courts are listening to this thread but software designers may
- be.
-
- Ideas:
-
- More usable demos, I think all software should have a demo for it that can run
- on any machine it is designed for. Ie. Even if a game can't be played
- without x amount of ram: etc.. the demo should be able to with lots of emphasis
- on the fact that you need whatever to run it. There are limits to this of
- course, I am just brainstorming. I tend to play a game once for a while then
- leave it and never pick it up again, demos would let software designers test
- the marketability of their products if it were a more common practice. Knowing
- you can't use the better software after playing their demos might get more
- people to upgrade. Might not. Demos would make for better software since
- people won't buy what they have tried and not liked. Piracy may be reduced
- since there would be less need to crack the software if you can preview it with
- a demo. May not. I think people start to pirate after buying x number of games
- , playing them once and never looking at them again, then examining their
- wallet.
-
- More thought to design, some things are cracked to get them to do something
- they don't do already, install on a hard drive, etc.. There has got to be
- better ways to avoid piracy than word lookup and disk protection, some thought
- to that should be given as well. If you put 40 games on a hard drive, having
- to have 40 manuals around for word lookup is a drag. Disk protection is ok, as
- long as the software doesn't write to it, ie. saving a game position. If your
- drive is a bit off you may make the disk go bad. Word lookup is better in my
- opinion although a photocopier can get around that.
-
- Anyway, enough rambling.. have at it. 8+)
