- Please, folks! Can't we at least TRY to keep things straight here?
- We're talking piracy here, consisting of basically two things:
-
- 1) Property (software) is being copied without permission, thus:
- 2) Income is being held from the copyright holder.
-
- It's not THAT tricky, is it?

- The copyright holder _has_ not been deprived of any property. He's "only" had
- his property copied, like if I copy parts of your source code or a book.
-
- In 99% of all software piracy cases, the victim doesn't even know nor can
- find out if he's been attacked or not, since it leaves no marks.
-

-
- A piece of software may cost, say, $10.000 to develop. The effective cost of
- creating each additional copy is none, $0.00.
- The only cost is that of the wrapping, i.e the media (diskettes) used to
- transport the software.
-
- I can't come up with an example of 'hand tooled goods' where the only cost of
- duplication is that of the wrapping. Can you?

-
- True. The point is, though, that it is simply not correct to equal theft of
- physical items with copying of proprietary information. Not even legally
- correct.
-
- If I steal a car, I'm prosecuted for theft. If I copy parts of someone's
- book and start selling it, I'm prosecuted for violating copyright laws.
- The same applies for software.
-
- Please also note that I'm *NOT* saying this to in any way promote or encourage
- piracy. I'm just trying to get things straight. A lot of people are almost
- scared to discuss the subject, since it's a goddamn tabu!
-
- Piracy == Copying without permission == Illegal
-
- Please?
