- Subtitle: Why buy a Quatum.
-
- Here's my story:
-
- I bought a used GVP A500 HD+ from comp.sys.amiga.marketplace. The unit
- had a 52 meg Quantum. (The drive was actually an "Impulse Plus" drive --
- the tag read "A division of Quantum."
-
- The drive would occasionally spin down. The GVP tech guy told me how to
- measure incoming power with a meter. The power was good; the HD has a problem.
- (Note on GVP tech support: the gentlemen I have talked to appear very
- competant. They're number is not toll-free. Be prepared to pay lots of
- long-distance charges while waiting a long, long time for someone to answer.
- Not to worry -- they'll play you strange new-age music while you wait.)
-
- I called a myriad of Quantum 1-800 numbers. They had a recording or an
- individual who said the same thing, "Dial the Quantum 1-900 tech support
- number. And be prepared to pay $5.00"
-
- I 1-900 number! I tried to look on the bright side. At least it's only
- $5.00. It's entirely possibly to incur more than $5.00 of long-distance
- charges while talking to tech support using the conventional method.
-
- From the serial number on the drive, the Quantum dude could tell me the
- month it was made. It was still within it's 2 year warranty. I explained
- how myself and the GVP dude determined it was the drive. The fellow
- didn't seem particularly interested in the explanation; he was immediately
- prepared to have the drive replaced. (Perhaps he recognized the drive as
- a potentially bad one by looking at the serial number.)
-
- He gave me an address to ship the drive to. He said they'll send a brand,
- spanking new HD with a new 2-year warranty. Cool. I haven't got it
- yet. We'll see what happens. I don't have any reasons to belive they
- will not follow through.
