- | Has anyone managed to read a QIC-24 tape on an A3070 tape drive? A
- | friend has a Sun 3 and some PD software I'd like to transfer to my
- | A3000 w/Amiga UNIX v2.1p2a via tape. Unfortunately, all attempts have
- | resulted in the A3070 returning a SCSI error, specifically a BLANK
- | CHECK (i.e., it thinks the tape is totally blank.)
-
- Yes; tapes written by a Sun-3 using both Wangtek and Archive QIC-24 drives
- have been read on an A3070 (running AmigaUNIX). Tapes written by a Sun-3
- using an Archive 2150S QIC-150 have also been read by the same A3070.

- | We've tried DC300XL, DC600A, even an old Sun distribution tape to no
- | avail. I called Sankyo (the current owner of Calipher who made the
- | A3070 drives) and the friendly technician there is at a loss. The
- | A3070 (Calipher CP150AEH) is supposedly read-compatible with QIC-24.
- |
- | An alternate possibility is that my friends's Sun-3 tape drive is not
- | QIC-24. However, my friend is pretty sure it is. He frequently reads
- | original Sun system distribution tapes with the drive.
- |
- | Any ideas? Thanks.
-
- You didn't specify the Sun-3 model (i.e. Sun-3/50, Sun-3/60, Sun-3/80, etc.),
- the model of the tape drive (on the Sun), nor the version of SunOS distribution
- tapes.
-
- Point being: SunOS versions prior to 4.x were written on QIC-11 drives (which
- are 4 track).
-
- Just for reference:
-
- QIC-11 4 tracks
- QIC-24 9 tracks; read-compatible with QIC-11
- QIC-120 18 tracks; read-compatible with QIC-24
- QIC-150 18 tracks; read compatible with QIC-24, QIC-120 and QIC-150
-
- The diff between QIC-120 and QIC-150 is the recording density on tape.
- It's very unlikely to find a QIC-120 drive on other than an AT&T 3B2 system.
- A QIC-150 drive reads/writes 150MB using a 600' DC6150 tape, and reads/writes
- 250MB using a 1000' DC6250 tape.
-
- I've read about (but haven't personally verified) that the QIC-120 and QIC-150
- drives are read-compatible with QIC-11. If you look at how the tracks are
- placed on the tape, it's definitely possible. Archive tape drives can handle
- just about anything; damifino about those oddball "Calipher" (sp?) drives.
- Wonder why CBM didn't use the name-brand Archive or Wangtek drives?
-
- A QIC-525 (Archive ST525 aka DEC TZK10) drive *IS* read-compatible with QIC-24,
- QIC-120 and QIC-150, but uses a special highly-calendered tape and much higher
- density for its "native-mode" recording.
-
- In summary: are you sure YOUR A3070 is working properly? Have you been able
- to read tapes written on ANY other system?
-
- Heck, even my tprobe program works on AmigaUNIX; we used it to duplicate
- some 250MB tapes at the local Amiga dealer (one drive was an A3070 and the
- other drive was, hmm, "something else")(yes, two tape drives were on the
- same AmigaUNIX system).
