- Recently, British Rail introduced the BR Journey Planner. The BR Journey
- Planner is a computer program that helps you find the most convenient
- journey between two stations by giving the departure, arrival and
- connection times. It is the new electronic British Rail time-table, and the
- current release covers all information defined in the time-table valid from
- 28 September 1992 to 16 May 1993. The system should be available from BR at
- the moment. I do not know the exact price, but it should be something
- around 5 pounds (that was the initial idea).
-
- The system runs on IBM PC compatibles (Acorn users: do NOT hit "n" just
- yet :-) with an 386 or 486 processor and 4 Megabyte of memory. When it is
- running it switches the processor to 32 bit "protected mode", and it
- requires some 2.5 Megabyte of free memory (i.e. not used by Smartdrive or
- similar programs which may use extended memory). The program uses extended
- memory without the need for additional memory manager software.
-
- The reason I am posting this to the Acorn newsgroup is that we (the company
- that developed the Journey Planner software) would like to know whether
- there would be sufficient interest for an Acorn version. There have been
- suggestions to develop an Acorn version, especially considering the amount
- of Acorn computers at British schools. However, due to the requirements of
- the software, you would need a 4 Mb machine and probably a hard disk as
- well (loading some 2 Mb from floppies each time you start the program is
- probably not very practical). Given these requirements, would there be
- sufficient interest to justify a special development? We would like to hear
- some comment, which we could then pass to British Rail. Even better, if you
- really think it would be useful and that you would buy one, let BR know! I
- know that they would be interested to hear from you. The address you could
- write to:
-
- Journey Planner
- Network SouthEast
- Network House
- 1 Eversholt Street
- London NW1 1DN
-
- Given sufficient reactions, I am sure that BR will seriously consider an
- Acorn version. Personally, I think that the only thing which would require
- some substantial work would be the user interface.
-
- People from Acorn are invited to get in touch with me directly, if they so
- desire (eduard@cvi.ns.nl).

- P.S.
- Is there any UK newsgroup where a similar general announcement (and maybe
- hints for Apple Mac or Atari ST users...) would be welcome?
