- I will be teaching a course called Scientific Supercomputing in Spring
- '93 at the Colorado School of Mines. A description of the course
- follows:
-
- MACS 422c/582c: Scientific Supercomputing
- Spring '93
-
- Instructor: Manavendra Misra
- Office: Stratton 208, X3873
- email: mmisra@mines.colorado.edu
- Time: MWF 11am-12noon
-
-
- Researchers in application areas as diverse as Neural Networks,
- Robotics, Computer Vision, Databases, Economics, Geophysics and Mining
- feel the need for high performance computing systems. This course is
- an introduction to using Supercomputers for solving scientific
- problems. In addition to the instructional aspects of the course, it
- will involve students and faculty members who are currently
- solving computation-intensive problems as part of their research. Each
- student (or group of students) will be required to choose a term
- project early on in the course. Students are encouraged to bring
- projects from research in their own fields. Students will also be
- encouraged to choose ``project-mentors''--researchers who will help
- them choose a problem and provide expert knowledge in their field.
-
-
- Topics covered in the course include:
-
- Parallel algorithms for selected problems.
-
- Design of programs for vector, array, and distributed computers.
-
- Languages and tools for parallel computation.
-
-
- Students will have access to supercomputers like the Cray Y-MP and the
- Connection Machine at an NSF Supercomputing Center or at NCAR and will
- use them to work on their projects.
-
-
- Prerequisites: Knowledge of C or Fortran and senior or graduate standing.

- If any of you have taught a similar course, I'd love to hear about what
- books you used and any other advice you may have. Thanks!
