- >Well, mine is 580k, so I am very interested in finding out if

- >I do not want to loose my current desktop just to fix this.
-
- IBM has assigned APAR number PJ06759 to this problem, although they
- haven't predicted how long it will take to fix it.
-
- Meanwhile, I recovered safely from an 11MB (!) os2sys.ini by using
- copyini (reduced it to 29k). The procedure is cumbersome: copyini will
- produce copies without the garbage in a different directory. You then
- have to boot from your installation diskettes (so that the ini files are
- not in use) and copy the clean versions over the messy ones. If you
- don't change your setup while the copying is going on, you won't lose
- your desktop; copyini doesn't just restore the original ini files, but,
- rather, creates new ones that are aware of configuration changes you
- have made.
-
- By the way, after safely shrinking my ini files in this way, I proceeded
- to crash the system terribly by using checkini, a companion program to
- copyini. The fault here is mine: checkini tells you when it finds an
- error, offers to fix it, and suggests whether or not you should accept
- specific offers. I accepted all of them, including the ones it advised
- against. It could be that checkini would have shrunk my ini files still
- further (and safely) if I had followed its advice.
-
- But shrinking 11MB to 29k is, frankly, savings enough for me. My ini
- files have been growing quite slowly since then and I'll wait until they
- hit 1M before using copyini again. This time I won't even try checkini;
- it doesn't pay to be greedy.
-
- One user reports that Inimaint 1.1f has a feature similar to copy.ini,
- but lets you replace ini files on they fly while the system is running
- (no booting from floppies required). A neat trick. I haven't tried this
- because the latest version of Inimaint at hobbes is 1.1d; the 1.1f
- version showed up on CompuServe, where I don't have an account. I am
- told that I should be patient and the the newer version will eventually
- find its way to hobbes, as well.
-
- What we're really waiting for is a fix by IBM, but at least there is a
- safe work-around until then.
