- I need to report a problem I've had. There is some inaccurate info
- going around the net. Many people when listing supported SVGA cards
- list Video7/Headland. This is too inclusive. The IBM documentation
- list Vide07 VRAMII only. I have a card based on the Video7 adapter
- and HT208 chiptype (as reported by SVGA). With GA, I ran SVGA ON
- from DOS and things worked fine (except that SVGA was not supported
- in WPS with GA). I had hoped from some of the hype that I would
- get some SVGA support from the Service Pack. For my video card,
- WRONG. I got less. If I run SVGA ON from a full screen session,
- it generates an SVGADATA.PMI file. When I reboot, the screen hangs
- about where the logos disappear and my driver loading reports would
- begin. The WPS never appears and the system cannot be used.
- If I run SVGA ON from a booted copy of DOS (not under OS/2), I get
- a report that the card has an unsupported chip set. BTW, purging
- the SVGADATA.PMI file from the boot:/OS2 directory makes the
- system startable again.
-
- The Video card is a 1024i card. I plan to upgrade by video card sometime
- in the future, but there are reasons that I'm waiting. Since SVGA
- reports the card as unsupported, the new generic SVGA driver on hobbes
- will not work. Actually, without the SVGADATA.PMI file it 'works'. However
- full screen sessions get totally messed up video. Only the WPS works.
- However, a Headland 1.x driver does work.
-
- Since VRAMII is quite a different card from other Headland/Video7 cards,
- I hope IBM recognizes the need for support there. I have tried banging
- on Headland(or whatever they're called now, they were bought out). They
- are VERY unresponsive. I've told them that I've bought my last card from
- them and will recommend against them from now on (unless they show a
- marked changed in attitude). Having shot my bolt and received no real
- response, there is little more I can do. Any other Video 7 users out
- there? The last time I brought up this subject, I was overwhelmed by
- the silence.
