- Hi everybody,
-
- I have a problem since I added a second hard disk to my system. I have :
-
- 486DX33
- 8Meg RAM
- AMI BIOS (recent)
- ET4000 based no-name video adapter
- old disk : Seagate 130 Meg IDE
- new disk : Maxtor 7213A 213Meg IDE
-
- On the Seagate, I origially put two 62 Meg partitions with DOS 5.0.
- When I got OS/2, I re-partitioned as follows :
-
- First : 62 Meg FAT16 with DOS (primary)
- second : 30 Meg HPFS with OS/2 (part of extended)
- third : 30 Meg HPFS for apps under OS/2 (part of extended)
- last : 1 Meg Boot manager. (I had to put Boot Man. at the end to
- avoid losing my DOS partition. I didn't have enough energy to
- back up the whole thing)
-
- This has worked fine until now.
-
- I've hooked up my new, larger, drive, as the second drive and the
- partitions are :
-
- First : 1 Meg unused space to put a Boot Manager if I ever need one.
- Second : 30 Meg FAT16 for DOS, Win3.1 (nobody is perfect... :-) )(primary)
- third : 50 Meg HPFS for OS/2 use (part of extended)
- fourth : 60 Meg FAT16 (part of extended)
- fifth : 30 Meg FAT16 (part of extended)
- sixth : 30 Meg FAT16 (part of extended)
-
- If I boot off a floppy (DOS or OS/2), everything is fine and
- I can reach all partitions (except, of course, the HPFS under native DOS).
-
- If I try to boot off the hard disk, I get a message like :
-
- "disk read error. System halted" (It's in french, actually, but that's
- the idea of the message)
-
- If I destroy the boot manager on the first disk and make DOS bootable,
- I boot right into DOS without a hitch.
-
- The message comes from the boot manager, before the blue menu that
- usually invites you to choose from one of your systems. It is not a message
- from the BIOS, because my BIOS speaks english, and, as I said, this
- message is in french.
-
- I haven't seen anything about this in the FAQ, nor in the Tips&tech files,
- but it may have been discussed in this group at a moment when I wasn't
- concerned. Now that I'm getting concerned, I'd be very grateful if
- some friendly soul could give me a tip.
-
- Thanks in advance !
-
- Cheers from France.
