- In a earlier thread complaining about the robustness of OS/2,
- several responses implied that they had machines operating with
- essentially no crashes. Okay, I now have $10K for purchase of
- a new lab computer primarily for data collection and experiment
- control. I am looking for specific recommendations of reliable
- configurations (software and hardware) for a critical application.
-
- Specs: Minimum 486/33
- 1024x768 graphics resolution (desired)
- Ethernet connection (forced)
- TCP/IP running NFS/NFSD to UNIX Hosts (forced)
- GPIB instrument control
-
- Mission: Collect 10 KB data from experiment on 1 second intervals.
- Store on UNIX host via NFS for archive/analysis. Check
- configuration file on UNIX host for experimental changes.
- Experiments run 24 hours and must complete to be useful.
-
- The current systems are Northgate 486/25 and 486/33's with 16
- MB memory, Interlan NI6510 ethernet controllers, IBM TCP/IP 1.2.1,
- National Instruments GPIB2-AT card, SpeedStar VGA adapters, 204
- MB IDE disks. Mean time to system crash on ANY of our systems is
- 4-6 hours.
-
- Looking for recommendation of KNOWN systems running in similar
- situations which HAVE BEEN reliable. One crash a day is not
- adequate. The more specific as to hardware you can be, the better.
- (I'll even consider switching to MCA if that is more reliable).
- Please e-mail and I will post a summary if there appears to be a
- consensus.
